Nature of funding
The Network’s international travel funding is intended to strengthen links between the UK microsystems community and leading international organisations and facilities. It supports travel for UK Network members to visit overseas partners and for international microsystems researchers to visit the UK. The funding enables meaningful engagement that can lead to new collaborations, knowledge exchange, strategic funding bids, and joint research outputs. These collaborations may be between UK and international microsystems researchers, or an international group in another discipline that would benefit from UK microsystems expertise. This sits within the Network’s wider international engagement activity, including support for researcher exchange and opportunities to connect with international leaders through workshops and seminars.
The funding covers international rail or air travel and accommodation up front. Any funding for subsistence will be reimbursed after the travel has been completed, as long as it is in line with the University of Birmingham’s expenses policy. I’ll provide a copy of which will be provided if funding is awarded.
Conditions of funding
Funding is restricted to countries with which the UK is eligible for research activity under either Horizon Europe or EPSRC. Countries eligible via other funders but not EPSRC or Horizon Europe will not be considered. EPSRC currently has lead agency agreements with Luxembourg, Sao Paulo Research Foundation, United States through the NSF, Germany, Norway and the Republic of Ireland. Horizon Europe includes all member states of the European Union as well as Albania, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada, Egypt, Faroe Islands, Georgia, Iceland, Israel, Japan, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, New Zealand, North Macedonia, Republic of Korea, Serbia, Switzerland, Tunisia, Türkiye and Ukraine.
By completing this application the successful applicant also agrees to complete a copy of the Outcomes of UK Microsystems Network Travel Grant Form within 1 month after the end of the visit. Note that any EPSRC funded researcher/PhD is not eligible for this fund. You must use your work email address. Please submit your applications at least 3 weeks prior to a UK event and 1 month before international travel. If you are an ECR, please use the UK Microsystems Network Travel Fund (ECR). Please use your institutional email address.
Any research outcomes arising from this funding must acknowledge the Network in the research outcome, quoting Grant Ref: EP/Z534432/1 and must inform the Network so we are aware of this to facilitate our meeting of funding reporting requirements.
