
The Microsensors SIG will be hosting a workshop on the 18th of September at the University of Birmingham, exploring how microsystems address healthcare challenges, from commercialising clinical devices to accelerating medtech translation.
Microsystems are quietly reshaping what medical devices can do. Sensors small enough to be swallowed, implanted or worn continuously; diagnostics that move from central labs to the point of care; manufacturing platforms that make low-cost, high-volume clinical devices realistic rather than aspirational. The bottleneck is rarely the physics; it is the path from a working prototype to a regulated, reimbursed, manufacturable product.
This one-day workshop, hosted by the UK Microsystems Network and the Healthcare Technologies Institute of the University of Birmingham, brings together the people who have walked that path. Speakers from industry and academia will share candid accounts of commercialising microsystems for clinical use: what worked, what stalled, and what they would do differently. Alongside these case studies, sessions will examine where microsystems can most effectively accelerate medtech translation, in scalable fabrication, in regulatory and clinical evidence generation, and in the partnerships that carry a device from a university cleanroom into patient care.
