The UK Microsystems Network held its first symposium on the 7th of July 2026 at Homerton College, Cambridge, bringing together researchers from across the country for a day of talks and posters.
The UK Microsystems Network held its first symposium on the 7th of July 2026 at Homerton College, Cambridge. The event drew researchers from universities across the UK and was a great success, both in the quality of the science presented and in the strength of the community that came together for the day.

The programme showed how much ground microsystems research in the UK now covers. Talks ranged across surface acoustic wave platforms for antibacterial applications, microfluidics for topics as varied as Southern Ocean ice-nucleating particles, Lab-on-PCB biosensors and programmable droplet-based materials, optical fibre and nanophotonic sensing, MEMS resonators showing memristor-like behaviour and artificial nociception, symmetry-broken piezoresistive sensors, integrated micromagnets for flexible actuators, and ultra-miniature imaging systems. A poster session over lunch gave attendees further chance to discuss work in progress.

The reach of the community was clear across the day. Contributions came from the Universities of Northumbria, Leeds, Bath, Cardiff, Nottingham, York and Swansea, with an international view added by CMC Microsystems in Canada.
