
Dr Hamza Shakeel of Queen’s University Belfast recently hosted a workshop on MEMS for Harsh Environments in Belfast, sponsored by the Microsystems Network. The event brought together leading researchers to share insights into emerging materials, fabrication techniques, and applications designed for extreme conditions.
The workshop opened with a keynote from Prof. Dinesh Pamunuwa (University of Bristol), who presented on nanomechanical technologies for edge applications and highlighted their potential in next-generation computation.
Prof. Frederik Kotz-Helmer (University of Freiburg) followed with an engaging talk showcasing recent advances in the 3D printing and injection moulding of glass, and their implications for robust photonic systems.
Prof. Lijie Li (Swansea University) closed the sessions with a discussion of wide bandgap semiconductors, focusing on Gallium Oxide and its growing importance for high-performance devices in harsh environments.
